The dignity of the human person, abortion… and us

Life Rocks! The ongoing scandal in the United States over Planned Parenthood selling aborted baby organs has caused many to sit up and take notice to the tragedy of abortion.  Five US States have defunded Planned Parenthood in the wake of this scandal.  People are now questioning whether they can really say they are “pro-choice” after seeing the reality of the abortion industry, and the harsh truth that abortion kills a human being – a child.

The videos which have been made public are powerful witnesses to the humanity and the dignity of the human person, from the very first moment of existence.   A dignity that many today wish to cast aside in the name of convenience, autonomy, choice…

The rhetoric has become old.

When people wish to seek the truth, they will find it.

I believe that people need to actually see what abortion does to an unborn child to shake us out of our complacency.   Obviously there is a time and a place, and a way to do this that shows sensitivity.

Abortion is horrific.  It is heinous.  Arms and legs are torn off, tiny fingers and toes are visible among the crushed and mangled bodies.  It is a sight that no one wants to see, or even read about, because it is something so gruesome that it cannot be forgotten.  But they are images that give us fire in our belly to speak up in the face of this grave injustice.  It is a reality that cannot be ignored.

So what does this mean for us?

It means that every individual, every family, every Church, every person of good will must seek to make a stand for what is right and true in the face of this grave injustice.  As St John Paul II exhorted us: we must never tire, we must never give up, we must never be discouraged and we must not be afraid.

We have an obligation to speak up for our pre-born brothers and sisters – the most vulnerable among us – simply because they have dignity.

We must recognize the dignity of every human person from the very first moment of existence to the very natural end.  Every life is worthwhile.  Every life is precious.

A final word of encouragement from St John Paul II:

“Life will triumph: this is a sure hope for us. Yes, life will triumph because truth, goodness, joy and true progress are on the side of life. God, who loves life and gives it generously, is on the side of life.”

Let us pray with hope and work with a great sense of urgency for the sake of our brothers and sisters!

Planned Parenthood expose must call us to act

The recent expose of Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider selling baby parts reinforces what many in the pro-life field have been saying for a long time.  Abortion has nothing to do with “rights”; it is driven by profit.  Unimaginable to think that human beings would handsomely benefit off a fellow human especially in this so-called age of an ‘enlightened’ society.  To consider that the most defenseless of all is violently torn apart and their body parts sold off, signifies the level of depravity that humanity has descended to.  One could argue that the (outlawed) slave trade epitomized the profiteering off a fellow human though it is undeniable that slaves were not dismembered and their parts sold off for profit.  Abortion is worse.  Much worse.

Whilst many are outraged and rightly so, an obvious question needs to be asked; should we be shocked at the recent expose?  If then people are shocked now, what did anybody think the abortion procedure entailed?  Is it more likely that the human mind finds it difficult to process certain thoughts/images until confronted by the undeniable reality – such as these gruesome videos; or do we wish to be deceived under the guise of “choice”?  What “choice” does the unborn child have?  Lambs to the slaughter indeed.

Although these highlighted atrocities occurred in America, many questions have to be asked about Family Planning NZ who have been working closely with Planned Parenthood of America.  Both organisations are affiliates of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF).  Showing the oneness of mind between the two organisations, Cecile Richards, the President of Planned Parenthood was invited to New Zealand as recently as 2013 to speak at the Family Planning conference.

Among all the graphic evidence of profiteering off the wholesale slaughter of the innocents, the New Zealand media remains largely silent. To be fair though, much of the press within the USA refuses to report on these atrocities as well.  Need one ask why?

The Centre for Medical Progress has released a number of videos in which senior staff of Planned Parenthood nonchalantly chat about the sale of body parts.  In one of the admissions, the director of research at a facility says that abortionists can modify their [abortion] procedure to obtain “intact” fetuses.  Within the same gruesome video, we see a box containing body parts such as arms and legs of a human being – clear enough proof that it is not a “clump of cells” that is being ‘aborted’ but a human, a child of God.

What is striking about these videos is that the employees are ‘normal-looking’ women. In fact, the Director of Planned Parenthood could be described as attractive.  Today, when image has been elevated to an unprecedented level, one wonders whether ‘believ-ability’ or even levels of evil a person is implicated in, is perhaps mitigated by that person’s appearance.  After all, some of the Nazis ‘looked scary’ so it probably is not too difficult to look back and identify evil. On the other hand, many looked like the person next door; a good family man.

Fast forward to contemporary society; a society that is largely media-driven.  Attractive-looking, smart, sophisticated people are probably more ‘believable’ than others who may be less so.  But that is part of the deception; to present an attractive ‘front’, an everyday sort of person; a professional such as a doctor whose profession we still regard (and rightly so) as noble.  In one of the videos released by the undercover investigators, a doctor over lunch in a restaurant, calmly speaks of how she takes the lives of unborn children for profit – harvesting their body parts to order. Underpinning the deliberateness of her actions, she explains how they decide from which mum they will harvest the organs to fulfil customers’ orders for the required body parts.  Mind-numbing indeed.

While calls are underway to defund Planned Parenthood in the USA, it is difficult to imagine that this will happen.  Why might this be so?  Simply because large sums of money are being made from the death of unborn children.  Will the release of these videos turn the tide against abortion; probably on an individual level but not en-masse simply because large parts of society have been de-sensitised and would consider it their ‘right’ to do what they will; so effective has been this ‘rights campaign’, a neat fit within a selfish society.  However, hope is always to be found especially among the youth.  In addition, many women are publicly speaking up about the damaging effects of abortion; they refuse to be silent anymore.

Many of us know that abortion takes the life of an innocent child.  Many choose not to know; to turn a blind eye.  The womb of a mother, a sanctuary; the safest place for any child, has become a place of desecration.  This has not happened overnight.  Rather, it’s been a well-managed campaign of diabolical sophistication to reach the level it’s reached today.  The most natural relationship; that between a mother and her unborn child has been under sustained attack, to the point that too many mothers (and fathers) view their child as the enemy; one who should be destroyed.

We were privileged to have Abby Johnson, a former director of a Planned Parenthood facility in Texas, visit us here in New Zealand.  Abby shared her story of being involved in this industry for many years somewhat oblivious to the evil in which she was submerged.  When constantly asked the obvious question as to how she could not see that what she was doing was plain evil, her answer is simply “I don’t know”.  But through the grace of God, and the commitment of people praying outside the abortion facility, Abby quit the industry and now shares her amazing conversion story to countless people.  Perhaps Abby’s story reminds us of the direction we should be taking to convince mums to keep their unborn children; to convince the abortion workers that they do not have to be working in these death camps.

The answer is education, prayer, fasting, and action.  However, all these ‘activities’ must be underpinned by the virtue of courage.  It takes courage to stand against the tide; against a society that has become somewhat immune to the death of innocent children.  “Every child a wanted child” rings hollow when you consider the horrific alternative to this empty, meaningless slogan.

Family Planning’s obsession with sex

Family Planning New Zealand is an organisation obsessed with sex.  And they are especially obsessed with young people exercising their so-called ‘right’ to participate in sex.

Consequences of sexual activity outside of a monogamous committed relationship (that would be marriage) are a nasty by-product of experiencing fleeting ‘pleasure’ in Family Planning’s view.

Concern for the nation’s youth sees Family Planning hold clinics in a total of 56 locations.  23 of those are school-based services, and visits for under 22’s are free.  Regrettably, they have managed to wheedle their way into Catholic schools, influencing teachers and students alike with their propaganda which contradicts the church’s strong (and beautiful) moral teaching on human sexuality.

Providing sexual health services and “education” is a nice little earner for this organisation that has been working hard to desensitise and normalise all manner of sexual behaviours since its inception in 1936 as the Sex Hygiene and Birth Regulation Society.  Their gross income from grants, donations and service provision is around $15.5 million dollars each year.  In the year ended 30 June 2014, that income included government grants of $11.7 million.

Alarmingly Family Planning is pleased with the “success” of their Tauranga abortion facility.  According to their Annual Report 138 women had abortions in the year under review (1 July 2013 to 30 June 2014).

At this clinic Family Planning have been providing early medical abortions since March 2013.  Women are given the drug mifepristone (which blocks the action of the pregnancy hormone progesterone) then some time later (up to 48 hours) another drug, misoprostol, will be administered, expelling the preborn child and pregnancy related tissue.

The application for the license was submitted to the Abortion Supervisory Committee very quietly.  Earlier attempts in 2009 to gain a license for their Hamilton clinic was thwarted when pro-life groups worked together to expose the plan and the risks to women and their preborn children.  But now that they have one license, Family Planning will be looking to provide early medical abortions at all of their clinics.

There should be little surprise then that Family Planning invited Cecile Richards, the President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) to their 2013 Conference in Wellington.

Abortion and sex education are big business for Planned Parenthood.  In fact, Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of abortion in the United States.  And Family Planning New Zealand wants to learn from them.

What Family Planning don’t realise is that Planned Parenthood is getting exposed for its lies, dodgy information and greed.  If Family Planning take a page out of Planned Parenthood’s book they may just find themselves sinking in the muck too.

Abby Johnson visiting New Zealand

Abby Johnson to visit New Zealand

Abby JohnsonIn just five weeks, Abby Johnson will be hitting New Zealand shores to tell her inspiring and powerful story.

It was on October 5, 2009 that Abby walked out of the Planned Parenthood facility where she was clinic director and into the doors of the local pro-life organisation Coalition for Life.

Coalition for Life are the founders of 40 Days for Life – that incredible prayer vigil that has now spread throughout the world, saving the lives of thousands of babies and their mums and other family members from the devastation that abortion brings.  Numerous abortion facility workers have also left because of the prayers of the faithful vigil goers.  Abortion facilities have closed.  Countless people have had their eyes opened to what is happening in their own backyard.

Abby and the Bryan, Texas Planned Parenthood facility are part of those inspiring 40 Days for Life statistics.

Abby’s Planned Parenthood clinic was the very first site of 40 Days for Life.  Not only has Abby left and become a powerful and inspiring pro-life advocate, but that clinic closed in 2013.

So, who better to tell you just what Abby Johnson is like than those people who have prayed for her since she first walked through the gate of the Planned Parenthood facility in Bryan, Texas all those years ago?

Shawn Carney is the Campaign Director for 40 Days for Life and a good friend of Abby Johnson.  Earlier this month he wrote a post “The top 5 things I know about Abby Johnson… 5 years later” to celebrate Abby’s five year anniversary of leaving Planned Parenthood.   It is a great read and good introduction to the inspirational woman that is Abby Johnson.

Abby’s visit to New Zealand is one of those rare opportunities to personally hear the testimony of someone who has been immersed in the abortion industry.

Not only is she inspirational, Abby can show you how to effectively reach those who work in abortion facilities and abortion vulnerable women.  You will hear the inside story of what is REALLY driving the abortion industry and organisations like Planned Parenthood and New Zealand Family Planning.

Why does Cecile Richards want the Pope silenced?

see changeWhy does Cecile Richards want the Pope silenced?  Specifically, why does Planned Parenthood want the Holy See thrown out of the UN?

I was surprised to see the “See Change” campaign surface again. I thought it had died a natural and much needed death years ago, but no, it’s been resurrected.

This is a repeat of the 1999 attempt to remove the Holy See from the UN. The Holy See’s position on the UN was confirmed, and raised to the status of “observer” by the UN General Assembly in 2004. But “’Catholics’ For Choice” are at it again. They have a new campaign, but the same old goal, of stopping the Church speaking out on moral issues. And Planned Parenthood are supporting “Catholics” for choice, although, you have to visit the “See change” website to find that out. It’s nowhere on the Planned Parenthood’s extensive website. That’s very interesting, as Cecile Richards is very skilled in politics. She is the daughter of a former Texas governor, and was the deputy chief of staff to the pro-abortion Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives.

She is still very politically active, even appearing on TV advertisements to publicly denounce US politicians for not supporting abortion for rape victims. She’s not so loud about her own organisation’s poor record in performing abortions on women who have been raped, and then failing to report the rape to the police.

So why would she oppose the Holy See’s position on the UN? Especially at a time when we have a Pope who has a very nuanced position on abortion, contraception and same sex marriage?

Cecile Richards knows the same thing we know about Pope Francis. While his position on contraception, abortion and same sex marriage might be nuanced, it’s not soft. He strongly defends the churches beautiful and consistent teaching on these issues, but in a way that engages people, and fills them with enthusiasm for the Church. And to Cecile Richards, that makes the Pope a very dangerous foe. So the fact that the UN has already ruled on the Holy See’s position on the UN isn’t relevant to her. The fact that the UN have left the door open to upgrade their non-voting status is a concern for her. The argument was never really about whether the Holy See have the right to be on the UN. It’s simply about silencing any voice against abortion.

Once again, those who preach the message of ‘tolerance’ the loudest, are often the worst at taking their own advice.

Family Planning conference makes abortion a key ‘sexual health’ issue

Family Planning’s getting ready to show their true colours this week as they host their conference on “positive sexual health” in Wellington at New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa.

The conference, and it’s keynote speakers have seemed to escape the attention so far of national media, as has the content being discussed.

The deceptively cheery conference title, hides an agenda that speaks of lifestyles and behaviours that on the face of it may bring fleeting moments of happiness, only to eventually send those who partake into disease, abortion, deep hurt and regret.

So what exactly is the positive sexual health that Family Planning are talking about?  The World Health Organisation’s definition speaks volumes saying that sexual health is

…a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled.

In a nutshell, positive sexual health is about an anything goes “sexual freedom”, for people of all ages, with access to contraception and abortion, without the so-called “hang-ups” of previous generations, religious beliefs or cultural mores.  And this conference is about making sure that all New Zealander’s have this sexual “freedom” no matter what.

There’s a definite move towards promoting (and providing) greater access to abortion “services” in this country.  It is no secret that Family Planning support abortion law reform, which would see abortion removed from the Crimes Act.

So intent are they on shaking things up, Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America has been invited to share her vast knowledge on building a “sexual and reproductive health movement”.  Obviously Family Planning believe that the best way forward is to follow in the steps of the American abortion giant.  It must have escaped their attention that more than 24 Planned Parenthood clinics have closed this year and that they have been plagued with scandal.

Another keynote, Dr Mitchell Creinin, Professor and Chair in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of California Davis School of Medicine, has done extensive research on new contraceptive technologies and medical abortion.  Creinin has focused his research in part, on early methods of abortion, such as using IUDs post-pregnancy and medical abortion.  He will be sharing his knowledge on these topics.

At a glance, one would think the conference was primarily about abortion given the wide range of addresses on the topic, as well as the inclusion of high-profile abortion advocates such as Dr Morgan Healy, Dr Simon Snook, Dr Alison McCulloch and Dame Margaret Sparrow.  The following are a fraction of the talk titles:

  • “I had an abortion”: Addressing abortion stigma by placing women at centre.
  • Topic: Abortion provision in New Zealand and the role of medication abortion.
  • New Zealand after-hours abortion helpline. A look at the first year of 0800 MED TOP.
  • Early Medical Abortion (EMA) provision at a Family Planning clinic.
  • Safety and timeliness of community-based abortion in New Zealand.
  • Who Counts? The framing of abortion in New Zealand newspapers.

But one would be remiss in failing to mention the fact that both “sexuality education” and international projects are also on the agenda of this conference.

So-called “sexuality education” is a core business for Family Planning, one of the goals is to ensure that children as young as five receive their graphic sexual propaganda.  Exposing children to sexuality education at such a young age has the effect of denying parents the opportunity to teach their children.  Matters to do with the body are by their very nature very private.  What might be appropriate for one child at a certain age, will be completely inappropriate for another child, even within the same family.  Any education surrounding “sexuality” requires values and an intimacy that only parents can properly understand.

Another group of people are also coming under the spotlight at this conference. The Kiribati community have been the target of  Family Planning International, who, in their largest project ever, are working in Kiribati “to increase access to sexual and reproductive health information and services”.  Their efforts so far will be showcased during the conference and an analysis of the benefits given.

With sponsorship and exhibitors including ISTAR, Durex, Bayer HealthCare and ALRANZ this conference is very significant.  Family Planning are working towards services that mimic that of their sister organisation Planned Parenthood Federation of America.  Their ultimate goal is to push abortion, contraception and sexual promiscuity on all peoples, dismissing as irrelevant parental rights, faith, family traditions and cultural customs.

But they will not reach their goal without a fight.  Family Planning’s agenda has not been sold to every person in New Zealand, nor in the Islands.  The truth will be told.  True freedom will reign.  Family Planning will be exposed for it’s real agenda.

‘Epic news’: Pro-life leaders ecstatic over closure of clinic, site of first-ever 40 Days for Life

Abby Johnson and Shawn CarneyExciting news has been released this morning that the Planned Parenthood clinic that Abby Johnson, the great pro-life advocate, once was clinic director of, is to be closed down!  Abby Johnson will be visiting New Zealand April 24th to 27th, 2014.  Her visit will coincide with the conclusion of Family Life International NZ’s first ever 40 Days for Life Campaign in Auckland.

BRYAN, TX, July 18, 2013 ( – Before 40 Days for Life became an international phenomenon operating in hundreds of cities around the globe, it was a humble prayer campaign organized by local Texas pro-life activists who were disgusted at the presence of an abortion-providing Planned Parenthood clinic in their community.

Now leaders with 40 Days for Life are hailing the pending closure of that clinic – located in Bryan, Texas – as a sign of the power of prayer, as well as the fact that the momentum is now firmly on the side of pro-life.

Planned Parenthood announced this morning that the abortion-providing facility would be closing, along with two other clinics, thanks to funding cuts pushed through by Republicans. The news came on the same day that Governor Rick Perry signed the state’s new late-term abortion ban into law.

“This is epic news, 15 years in the making!” said David Bereit, the national director of 40 Days for Life. “Thousands of dedicated community members have faithfully prayed and held peaceful vigils outside this abortion center, offered hope and alternatives to turn away prospective Planned Parenthood customers, and educated the community about the harm of Planned Parenthood.

“These efforts, combined with the decisive action of the Texas legislature, have finally brought about this closure that is an answer to prayer,” Bereit said.

Even more than the site of the first-ever 40 Days for Life campaign, the Bryan, Texas, Planned Parenthood office may be most famous as the clinic where pro-life activist Abby Johnson worked for eight years as clinic director.

“This is what grace truly looks like,” said Johnson today after hearing about the clinic’s closure. “Knowing that the former abortion clinic I once ran is now closing is the biggest personal victory of my life.”

“From running that facility, to then advocating for its closure, and now celebrating that dream,” she wrote, “shows that my life has indeed come full circle. I am honored to have worked with so many who helped with my conversion and the closure of this facility. We will continue to fight until every abortion clinic in this country has shut its doors.”

Since leaving the abortion industry Johnson has gone on to found And Then There Were None, a new ministry which has since helped 60 other workers to leave the abortion industry over the last year.

“I was surprised when Abby Johnson walked through our doors back in 2009,” said Bobby Reynoso, executive director of the Coalition for Life, “but today I am not.”

“Victories like these should be expected when a community of faith stands up against the greatest injustice of the day,” Bobby said. “How little was my faith then, but today I’m reminded once again of how great a God we serve.”

That first 40 Days for Life prayer campaign took place outside the Bryan clinic in 2004, and has since grown to involve 575,000 volunteers in 501 cities around the globe. The campaign has been partly or directly responsible for saving at least 7,536 babies from abortion, closing 37 abortion centers, and helping 83 workers to quit their jobs in the abortion industry

“As the birthplace of 40 Days for Life and the place where Abby Johnson resigned after eight years working for America’s largest abortion chain, this is a huge victory for the entire pro life movement!” said Shawn Carney, 40 Days for Life campaign director.

“Peaceful and prayerful local opposition to abortion is ending abortion from the grassroots up,” he said.
